Summary

GOAT's hub parity check P4 (goat-si/goat #684, verifier in #696) needs to prove which Home answered a device's model request. Before this change nothing identified the serving Home, so P4 always came back unproven.

  • GET /healthz now includes instanceId, the install's opaque homeId from src/quota-pool/identity.ts (feat(management): passive GET /api/quota-pool (ocx.quota-pool/1 producer) #7476). It is home_ + 32 random hex characters minted once per install, persisted owner-only, stable across restarts, and never a hostname or derived from one.
  • Every GET /v1/models response the server answers carries x-opencodex-served-by: <instanceId>, whichever branch produced it (200, the Codex client_version catalog, refusals). A wrapper at the end of createServeOptions applies it; other routes are unchanged.
  • A Remote Link Child never answers /v1/models itself: its relay already copies the Home's response headers, so the Child returns the Home's id unchanged and never stamps its own. A Hub-mode client's Codex calls the Hub data listener directly, so the Hub's own response names the Hub. A standalone proxy names itself.
  • The package-tree-fenced 503 /healthz body (during an in-place update) carries the same instanceId, matching the still-stamped fenced /v1/models 503.
  • If the identity is unavailable (just after a fresh start, before the background mint, or when the file is malformed or unreadable), both the field and the header are omitted. An empty or malformed value is never sent; homeInstanceId() revalidates the shape as a safeguard.
  • SERVED_BY_HEADER_EMITTED in src/remote/served-by.ts (feat(readyz): advertise peer features from one registry #7477) is now true, so /readyz features lists served-by-header.

Docs: the management API reference has a new "Home identity and the served-by header" section, the Remote Link guide explains how to check which Home serves a Child, and structure/runtime.md, remote-link.md and quota-pool.md are updated.

Hub-mode client note for GOAT: the Hub-mode machine listener on the device port does not serve /v1/* (it 404s; that is unchanged here), because a Hub client's Codex is configured with the Hub's serverUrl/v1. GOAT's parity probe of 127.0.0.1:<port>/v1/models therefore only gets this header on Home/standalone/link-Child devices. For Hub clients it should read the Hub data URL the client uses, or OpenCodex would need a new data-plane relay on the client listener. That is a separate product decision and is not part of this PR.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck passed.
  • bun test tests/server/served-by-header.test.ts tests/server/readyz-features.test.ts: 11 pass. The new file covers /healthz instanceId presence, equality with homeId, stability across a restart, opacity (no hostname or its hex, a fresh install gets a different id), and omission of both field and header with an invalid identity file. It also checks the header on standalone, Hub data listener and link-Child-relayed GET /v1/models (through the Home's real link listener, plus a fake Home naming another id to show pass-through). With stamping disabled locally, 5 of these cases fail.
  • tests/server/server-auth.test.ts (the unauthenticated /healthz key-set guard) now allows only instanceId in its fixed shape beyond the existing keys.
  • bun run test:changed: 9733 pass / 1 fail before the guard update above. That fail was the guard; it passes now.
  • tests/test-layout*.test.ts, tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts, bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan passed.
  • bun run test (full suite, under the shared heavy-test lock, on the first commit): 2 failures.
    • file-size ratchet: repository flagged src/server/index/serve-options.ts at 2001 lines. The second commit moves the stamping into src/remote/served-by.ts; the file is now 1993 lines, and the ratchet test passes on the new head.
    • connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart (stored profile=false) in tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts also fails locally with this PR's src/ changes stashed. Its expected native GPT labels differ from this machine's catalog, so it is environmental and unrelated; CI is the reference.
  • Fenced case: served-by-header, package-tree-integrity and proxy-liveness-package-tree-fence tests pass (61 pass across those plus readyz and the ratchet).
  • After the fix: bun run typecheck, and served-by-header, readyz-features and file-size-ratchet tests pass (20 pass).

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Only the random homeId is published; the identity secret is never exposed, and nothing hostname-derived is sent.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a stable, opaque Home instance identifier to /healthz and quota-pool responses.
    • Added the x-opencodex-served-by header to successful /v1/models responses.
    • Preserved Home identity information through Remote Link and Hub access.
  • Behavior Changes

    • Served-by information is omitted when the Home identity is unavailable or invalid.
    • /readyz advertises whether served-by headers are supported.
    • Deleting the identity file rotates the Home identifier and related quota-pool references.
  • Documentation

    • Documented Home identity behavior, verification steps, relay handling, and identity rotation.

GET /healthz publishes the install homeId as instanceId and every GET /v1/models response carries it in x-opencodex-served-by. A link Child passes the Home header through; both are omitted while the identity is unavailable. /readyz now advertises served-by-header.

📝 Walkthrough

The server exposes a persistent Home identity in /healthz and successful /v1/models responses. Hub and Remote Link paths preserve or expose the serving Home identity. Documentation and tests cover identity format, availability, response behavior, and propagation.

Changes: Home identity and propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Home identity and response stamping
src/remote/served-by.ts, src/server/index/serve-options.ts, tests/server/readyz-features.test.ts, tests/server/server-auth.test.ts
The server validates the persisted Home identity, includes it in health responses when available, and stamps routed GET /v1/models responses. Readiness and health tests validate the response boundaries.
Hub and Remote Link identity propagation
structure/remote-link.md, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/remote-link.md, tests/server/served-by-header.test.ts
Hub responses expose the Hub identity. Remote Link Child responses preserve the Home-provided served-by header and omit it when the upstream response is unstamped.
Identity behavior coverage and documentation
tests/server/served-by-header.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md, structure/quota-pool.md
Tests cover stable, fresh, unavailable, failure-response, Hub, and relay identity behavior. Documentation describes the identity format, exposure, omission, and rotation.

The fenced 503 /healthz body omitted instanceId while the fenced /v1/models response still carried x-opencodex-served-by, so peers could not compare them during an in-place update.

🟡 Minor · Add src/remote/ to the quota-pool source map. · quota-pool.md:73-75

structure/quota-pool.md:73-75
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add src/remote/ to the quota-pool source map.

structure/quota-pool.md now explains behavior implemented by src/remote/served-by.ts. The document must therefore declare src/remote/ in manifest.json. Regenerate structure/INDEX.md so its inverse map includes both documents.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert that the /v1/models request is refused.

The request at tests/server/served-by-header.test.ts:184 has no API key, so /v1/models returns 401 before checking Origin. The test checks only the served-by header. It would also pass if the request were accepted and returned 200 with that header.

Re the two outside-diff findings in the latest CodeRabbit review:

  • Refusal status in served-by-header.test.ts: fixed in 79f248e. The case now asserts the status, which is 403 origin_rejected rather than 401. A standalone proxy on loopback admits a keyless call, so the foreign Origin is what refuses it. The header is still asserted to name the Home.
  • Adding src/remote/ to the quota-pool.md source map: not applied. src/remote/ is owned by structure/runtime.md, which documents the served-by contract (the instance id, /healthz, the /v1/models stamping and the relay pass-through). quota-pool.md only cross-references it to say homeId doubles as the instance id. The directory also holds hub-state, protocol and feature code unrelated to the quota pool, so co-ownership would make every unrelated src/remote/ change obligate a quota-pool.md edit. structure:check passes as is.

Merged with owner authority per maintainer decision 2026-10-21 (jun): the project owner authorized owner-path (--admin) merges for the pending green PRs after the 2.90.0 release; no second-maintainer approval is available.

Exact-head verification on 79f248e7e26c4b1ac5618762734f026468a5208e: all checks completed with no failures, the PR is mergeable, there are no change requests, and no unresolved current Major/Critical/P0/P1 review threads. A local squash of this head onto current dev 7c08a2948 passed typecheck, structure:check, the file-size, import-cycle and test-layout ratchets, and this PR's own tests ( 232 pass 0 fail ). Windows-sensitive: false; PR CI never runs Windows (AGENTS.md CI policy), so a Windows-sensitive PR merges only after a green lane=all dispatch. The merge is a squash pinned with --match-head-commit.
